Exposure Times and Sound Pressure Level

Understanding how loud your workplace is, and for how long you are exposed, is the starting point for choosing the right hearing protection. Use the calculator below to work out your exposure.

The decibel scale is used for SPL because it spans a wide range from the threshold of hearing to the threshold of pain. A 3 dB increase actually doubles the sound intensity, while 10 dB doubles the perceived loudness.

SPL indicates how loud a sound is, while sound pressure refers to the average variation in air pressure caused by sound waves. SPL is measured using a sound level meter, and typical human hearing ranges from 0 dB SPL (mosquito buzz) up to 120+ dB SPL at the threshold of pain.

Higher SPLs can cause permanent hearing damage over time, so SPL measurements help determine safe listening durations at different loudness levels.
